I just started with ATI cards and I'm not having any problems with this.

ATI has been horrible with their drivers lately. The coding has sucked, absolute paths have been incorrectly typed in, the Control Center doesn't even work, and a ton of cards aren't even supported in this release that were supported in 7.2. Supposedly this brings some better Open GL support, but the drivers won't even install properly on one of my machines. I used to love ATI, but I really wish I could make the switch to nVidia right about now.

You're some kind of wrong there, pal. nVIDIA has, as "sjc001" says; very poor Vista support, and Creative's drivers for Vista are the source of much irritation from X-Fi owners.

Nvidia support has been fine for me. The creative driver has a long way to go.

Theres nothing wrong with nvidia or ati, give them a break though, as vista has not long been out, i assure you that that these drivers run sweet as fook on xp, but then xp is now really stable, i do remember that xp was terrible when it first came out.
