The FREE version actually works better than the paid-version.
WHY? Because the FREE version's update server works, but the paid-version's update server has always been slow or unresponsive.

Some might say this is OT, but if you check the latest AV performance statistics here:
http://winnow.oitc.com/malewarestats.php
you will see that BOTH the supposed KINGS KASPERSKY and NOD32 perform quite poorly on unknown viruses compared to Avira AntiVir.
And you can forget about AVG, Symantec, McAfee, etc.
So if either Kaspersky or NOD32 is a King, then what can we call Avira?
