Traditional safeguards for outgoing Internet connections are becoming easier for malicious software to bypass. Programs that aim to steal sensitive data and hand it over to unauthorized individuals or organizations no longer rely on the principle of “assumed sender authorization”. Instead, users are provided with an option to specify the list of programs which can be launched, share and control external programs without further reference. Users can thus create a rule for the default Internet browser to launch other programs in context (e.g., Internet Explorer opening up an Acrobat document in its window), which would not cause Outpost to display a confirmation prompt.
