DVD Decrypter -- gone forever

Hello world,
I've got some good news and some bad news. Let's start with the good.... (tumble weed passes by)Ok, and now onto the bad: DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 is the last version you'll ever see.We hoped this day would never come, but it has, and I can promise you, nobody is more gutted about it than I am.

What started as a bit of fun, putting a GUI around some existing code, turned into something that I can only describe as "part of me" – yes, I know that's sad ;-) As I've recently been made aware (by a letter, hand delivered to my door, last Tuesday), due to some law that was changed back in October 2003, circumventing copy protection isn't allowed.

Ok so it has taken a while (almost 2 years), but eventually "a certain company" has decided they don't like what I'm doing (circumventing their protection) and have come at me like a pack of wolves. I've no choice but to cease everything to do with DVD Decrypter. I realise this is going to be one of those "that ** [ www.9down.com refused this word ] ** - fight them!" kinda things, but at the end of the day, it's my life and I'm not about to throw it all away (before it has even really started) attempting to fight a battle I can't possibly win.

If 321 Studios can't do it with millions, what chance do I have with £50?! As I'm sure most of you have already noticed, the site has been down for a few days. That surprised me as much as the next person (slight breakdown in communication), or I would have issued this statement on it directly.

So anyway, from this point forward, I'm no longer permitted to provide any sort of assistance with anything that helps people infringe the rights of "a certain company". That means, no more emails, no more forum posts, no PMs, no nothing! END OF STORY. The domain name will be transferred over to the company by the end of the week (9th June, according to the undertakings I have to sign) so don't email it thinking "Oh, I'll just ask LIGHTNING UK! for support on this". You'll not be getting the intended recipient and could be landing yourself in sh1t!

With 3.5.4.0 being the last version, it makes sense for everyone to disable the "check for new versions" feature, as obviously there won't be any. Of course what I really mean is that you should all stop using the program out of respect for the company's rights.

Anyone hosting DVD Decrypter is advised to cease doing so immediately. I've the feeling they won't stop with just me. I'm having to contact anyone I know of that is (at the very least, the "mirror" sites), and tell them to stop. Copies of those emails must also be sent to the solicitors so they can check I'm doing everything I'm supposed to. If I don't, I die.

It is of course down to the owners of those sites to react how they want to. It's not my job to force you to do anything you don't want to, I'm just giving you some friendly advice. Maybe it's just me, but I see this as a bit of an "end of an era". I realise there are other tools, but there's no telling how much longer they'll last, and not only that, mine was the oldest! I've met loads of great people over the years and I want to take this opportunity to wish them every success for the future - yes DDBT peeps, that includes you lot! I hope you've all enjoyed my contribution to the DVD scene and maybe I'll see ya around sometime.

LIGHTNING UK!
(Author of the once "Ultimate DVD Ripper", DVD Decrypter)

Quite shocking news in deed, but not exactly unexpected, as the UK implemented their version of EUCD legislation back in 2003 and it clearly states that distribution, etc of tools that allow circumventing copy protection mechanisms is illegal. Similar fate is very likely to happen to all other DVD rippers developed by European companies (the similar legislation has been in place in the U.S. for years now).

As Finland, where AfterDawn Ltd is located, hasn't implemented EUCD to its national legislation yet, we continue to host DVD Decrypter's last version, as well as several other DVD ripping tools on our site.

I'd wish to express my sympathy to the author of DVD Decrypter, situations like this can be quite devastating. All thell the best!

And just to annoy few people in Hollywood, here's the link to the latest/last version of DVD Decrypter:

Could this just be the first blow?
What about software like AnyDVD? Does that infringe the law, even though it doesnt rip the DVD itself?

RIP DVD Decrypter :-(

That's why ANYDVD CLONECD CLONEDVD has moved from their homebase . To ANTIGUA , so they are secure for any copyprotection law there

So sad to see our liberties being eroded by BIG BROTHER ( not the cr@p tv show !!!)

A useful tool bites the dust but there's more behind the scenes.
Thx for all the support you gave the scene dude.. respect, live long & prosper.

"That's why ANYDVD CLONECD CLONEDVD has moved from their homebase . To ANTIGUA , so they are secure for any copyprotection law there"

*Cough* Not CloneDVD though. Why should it ?
It doesn't break any law, 'coz it itself is incapable of copying protected DVDs. So, the HQ is still in Switzerland.
But that was a very SMART ( of O....r ) to move CCD & AnyDVD off-shore ;-)), i.e out of reach of those greasy greedy bastards' hands.

As for DVDDecrypter, it's a very sad story but the end was rather predictable.
And I do really feel sorry for LIGHTNING UK! ...well, due to some reasons that ain't supposed to be discussed here.

Regarding DVDShrink, don't worry'bout it.
Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY knows who's behind it. ;)))

Isn't it about time that someone turned the law on it's self! . If the police take away a computer that has encrypted files on it as protection, the police will use a program to decrypt the files, thus surely breaking this new law (or can they break the law to see if you are possibly breaking the law). Also, if someone makes a statement to the police and it is signed and dated by the person giving the statement, that statement then becomes copyrighted which means the police are in breach of the copyright law if they photocopy it and pass the copies to anyone else without consent.
Please correct me if my line of thinking is wrong.

As far as im aware i think u might be right, but there is one drawback in that idea. The security forces are given the premission to "bend" the laws to a certian degree in enforcing the law. (eg high speed chase, use of a gun to disarm/disable someone etc)

How come shotting someone when at "war" isnt murder, but shooting someone that breaks into your home is

This does not surprise me. At the present time, democracy + capitalism works this way: Laws are written by politicians that are "driven" (paid) by powerful people (those who have money, much money). It sounds like a closed circle.

My sense condolence from Sudacaland

If copying CD's is wrong, copying DVD's is wrong, ripping CD to mp3's or anyother format is wrong, then selling blanks CD's + DVD's should also be wrong, along with selling CD and DVD burners.

It's like selling someone a brand new car and saying one can not drive it on the road.

Maybe my thinking is wrong but it sure sounds the same to me.
Re: DVD Decrypter -- gone forever by mat1983 on 2005-06-10 17:56:57
Is it not your right, (which means laws cannot take it away) to be allowed 1 backup copy of any digital material we own, for the expressed reason of only using it as a backup. i.e. not passing on the backup to others.

If this isnt true then all forms of backing up music, films etc should never be sold including software (that means windows - due to windows media player) hardware (blank cddvdmp3mp4sky+dvd recordersvcr's etc)
which would mean that most of the major companies eg microsoft, apple, sony, philips, toshiba, pace, and any the stores which sell the software and hardware could all be taken to court for selling goods designed only for the reason of breaking the copyright laws.

mat1983, very good point. I will have to remember that one.

Very sad notice....but is expected that reaction from people from big companies and government.

Comunism? Capitalism? for me is the same sh*t, the sionism behind everything trying to control their world.
But i´m completely sure they will lose the fight against creativity and intelligence.

Best regards......from Mexico
