ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a
Posted by Anonymous 912 Day ago, There are 31 comments, 11424 views

ESET Smart Security is a fully integrated security solution and includes antivirus, anti-spyware, a personal firewall and antispam. While some competitive solutions purport to have similar functionality, ESET has developed a unique approach that provides true and full integration of point security solutions. The key advantage of this approach is that individual protection modules are able to communicate together seamlessly, to create unparalleled synergy to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of protection. Moreover, the integrated architecture guarantees optimal utilization of system resources, so ESET Smart Security continues ESET’s well know reputation for providing rock solid security in a small footprint that will not slow down an individual’s computer.

What’s new
ESET Smart Security is a milestone in the field of computer protection against infiltrations and attacks. The program offers more than just a sum of its parts – it is synergy that matters most. If all components are used simultaneously, the effectiveness of the whole program is multiplied. ESET Smart Security unifies all its functions to create a complex security solution.

ESET Smart Security is based on three basic pillars:

ESET NOD32 Antivirus + Antispyware

This component is in fact an improved version of the award-winning scanning engine of NOD32 Antivirus v2.7.

ESET Personal Firewall
Firewall monitors all traffic between a protected computer and other computers in the local network and in the Internet.

ESET Anti Spam
ESET Anti Spam serves to filter unsolicited email, which makes your work with email more effective.

Here is the changelog for the release:

ESET PERSONAL FIREWALL
    * Improved compatibility with other installed TDI filters, such as Sunbelt Software Personal Firewall.
    * Fixed an issue with notification windows not being displayed when the firewall is in Interactive Mode.
    * Fixed an issue with excluding applications from being checked for modifications.

REAL-TIME FILE SYSTEM PROTECTION
    * Fixed an issue with the graphic user interface not properly reporting when real-time file system protection had been disabled.
    * Fixed an issue with how real-time file system protection scanned newly-created or modified files. Real-time scanning now properly quarantines files infected files on network shares.

ON-DEMAND SCANNING
    * Fixed the problem with scanning the "My Computer" object or individual files were checked.

ANTI-SPAM
    * Fixed an issue with Microsoft Outlook 2007 crashing when closed.

RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by NinjaGinger on 2007-05-11 18:32:24
Have heard that the firewall is very tight and shows great promise. Even though it is beta it is as good as most none beta so the final will truely be awsome, so Ive heard. AS for Vista, I have ultimate and it installs fine and works, Chadsort, it must be something else.

Crashing vista by chadsort on 2007-05-11 18:45:30
Well, i dont think its to do with something else. My friend got a new com, installed updates drivers and stuffs and this program. After installing it, his com was like lagging every 20 seconds and is forced to reboot everytime. It made the com totally unusable.

Oh yea..it has nothing to do with BIOS settings either, so i just figured out that the problem is with this beta and i removed it. Guess wat, his com is running at top speed now.
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by chadsort on 2007-05-11 18:46:43
Also, i wouldnt dare to install it on my com..anyway

ESET have outdone themselves :) This is a brillian t program; amazing code.

....I can't wait for the final. Literally, this has the potential to be the one required piece of software that takes care of you as complete as possible.

If your a beta tester, by all means try this. The last couple of re;eases had problems. I expect this one to as well. I fyou are not a beta tester please avoid. I am a NOD32 user so do think me to be a flamer. I just think we should wait for the final. It is due in June.
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by r2rX on 2007-05-12 13:47:41
I've installed and configured ESS, and it's functioning quite well (up till now).

What sort of problems did the prior releases include?
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by PD1447 on 2007-05-13 09:42:16
Prior releases had leaky firewall and non functional interface problems. What i have been able to pick-up from the fourms at Wilder is that the beta 1a has a good 90% of this cleaned up. But its still generating reports of diffaculties rangeing from inability to install all the way to BSODs and random reboots. Some individuals have had nothing but pure joy from this release. The sales rep for my shop tell me that the final v3 will be released June 2007. I am a beta tester but I have been to bust with the MLB and NHL lately to do much of that. SO! I will wait for the final. But I will use the final.
RE : by pascal4 on 2007-05-13 16:35:35
any price range?
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by Typoteus on 2007-05-13 17:45:33
Has someone tested this with ShieldsUp or something? Im really interested...
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by Eiht on 2007-05-16 03:20:15
I like this a lot but is there no context scanner? or am I just missing a tick box to turn it on? Thanks
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by Shahid34 on 2007-05-16 15:17:53
It workd great for me I am using XP Professional Edition
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by Eiht on 2007-05-17 05:27:10
Shahid34 are you responding to me? You have a context menu in windows explorer to scan individual files? If not never mind but I don't so maybe I'll reinstall but all else seems to work for me so far. I like that it runs a little lighter than KIS and I really needed a Suite rather than spending resources on multiple appz. Thanks.
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by Eiht on 2007-05-17 05:28:45
I meant a context menu entry under right click menu on files and folders. I wish they'd put an edit feature on 9down already.
RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by pascal4 on 2007-05-18 02:18:09

I meant a context menu entry under right click menu on files and folders. I wish they'd put an edit feature on 9down already.

You don't need one...

If you have the Real-time file system protection enabled then why would you need to scan a file manually?

Besides, one less shell extension for Explorer to load is a good thing..

RE:ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1a by Eiht on 2007-05-18 05:00:40
Yea suppose that's true. Guess I'm just a creature of habit. Thanks for answering though I wasn't sure if I'd get a real answer or like a hundred people ***ing about which AV to use and why they think they know what "I" should use. Thanks
RE : by pascal4 on 2007-05-18 20:12:15
Well, if you're not anti-smart, dimino_something or other like them and I have a proper answer then I'll give it...

Goodbye nodCRAP; Hello Kaspersky!!!

Published July 12th, 2007 in Corporate Talk

"Eset's nodCRAP has long been our favorite anti-virus program at NeoSmart Technologies.
In recent years (mainly from last year though), nodCRAP has fallen WAY BEHIND in the detection rankings, but for the most part had remained a decent choice. Virus.gr has the latest testing results as summed up in this post at CyberNet News. In the latest round of tests (and the one before that, and the one before that) Kaspersky is yet again at the top, with a 99.23% detection rate for the newly-released version 7 and a 99.13% for version 6. But all changed with the release of Kaspersky 7. In a test run, we found 3 different trojans on our machines (for a total of 6 infected files) that nodCRAP hadn't detected (even with heuristics enabled and set to the highest level) which Kaspersky picked up immediately.
The real kicker wasn't the fact that nodCRAP missed a trojan, it was the fact that 2 of these trojans have been listed in the Kaspersky virus signature database since mid-2006, and that when reporting such missed trojans the nodCRAP team replies in a mostly arrogant manner.
Looking at this thread where a nodCRAP user reported to their tech support that several common trojans ((One of which was found in our test run here at NeoSmart Technologies)) weren't picked up by nodCRAP but were by Kasperksy, the replies by nodCRAP moderators are quite shocking. They start off by claiming that the original poster's title is misleading purposely accusatory (which it isn't, objectively speaking) and this later escalates (when a new poster claims to have a list of 21 trojans nodCRAP failed to detect) into accusations of virus-harvesting and purposely looking for nodCRAP's weaknesses.
What should have been a simple "thank you for your observations and our apologies for the inconvenience" became a highly-ridiculous "nodCRAP can do no wrong" thread. We've been recommending nodCRAP since the start, but to us it is clear that this is where we part paths. If a company makes a mistake an oversight of a single trojan, that we can live with. But when moderators on their forum insist on turning it into a personal attack against anyone that has any issues with nodCRAP, it's sign that something very wrong is underfoot.
So, goodbye nodCRAP, you've served us average throughout the years (as previous threads and articles will testify). But it's time for a new AV that continues to improve and without taking offense to simple mistakes. Unfortunately, pride and failure often to lead to one and the same thing - and if there's a better alternative, we'd be fools not to take it."

Why Kaspersky IS Better Than nodCRAP - Here’s another reason!

By: Alexander Dimitru, Security Expert

"You can’t always tell which is the best anti-virus for your machine, as all the vendors will claim they deliver top-notch solutions, that they are leaders on the market and all that. Also, you often get facts stating that in some test a certain anti-virus ranked first, but they rarely state what competition they had. In any case, in view of recent events, Kaspersky beats the crap out of nodCRAP; and I will give you some facts and explain why it is so.

A computer with nodCRAP and Windows XP SP2 had been infected by several Trojans. The AV found two of them and no matter how many times you would delete them, they would still pop up after rebooting. nodCRAP could not disinfect the files, it just deleted them. That was pretty nasty. Couldn’t get rid of the threats! Cmd didn’t help much either – I guess they were stuck in the Recycler or something. Now, what I advised the owner of the affected machine was to run other AV solutions… however, none of the free ones seemed to do better than nodCRAP, fact which was to be expected. Then she asked me what else could she buy, so I advised her to get Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0. The minute it had been installed it asked for an update and a full system scan. It took Kaspersky about 2 hours to scan a 70% full 160GB hard drive, but it found 8 threats and eliminated them all. I then rebooted the machine and scanned the folders where the viruses had been discovered – now it was all clean. So, based on this experience, I would definitely go with Kaspersky, rather than nodCRAP.

To us users, it’s these things that count. It doesn’t matter what tests and magazines say – when you’re facing a threat and your AV doesn’t help you enough, then you deem it useless. Users don't care what other threats it may destroy – they want to get rid of the ones THEY'RE facing! Furthermore, after this happening, I definitely became a Kaspersky fan. I, for one, don’t care how much resource it will eat up – at least I will stay protected. What’s the use of having security software that will not "stress" your machine, if it’s also ineffective against viruses?"
