K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-Decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. It is designed as a user-friendly soluction for playing all your video files. You should be able to play all the popular movie formats and even some rare formats.

The K-Lite Codec Pack works on Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/XP64/Vista.
Vista comes bundled with its own DVD decoder, so by default this pack does not install yet another one. But if you don't like Microsoft's decoder, simply select another decoder in the pack.

Regarding vista, there is pack called "vista codec pack" it is much smaller and faster to install, so do not use this on vista, my recommendation. I think its from same ppl, but not sure
