Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2005
After the download, this tool runs once to check your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and automatically helps remove any variants found. After it runs, the tool is deleted from your computer. A new version of the tool will be offered every month. If you want to manually run the tool on your computer, you can download a copy from the Microsoft Download Center or run an online version from microsoft.com. In addition to using this tool, you should use an up-to-date antivirus product to help protect your computer from other malicious software.

Quite a lengthy post, but important as it gives good guidance about why people must install the updates. Most companies are pro-active in releasing security updates, but none of these exploits are currently public and ravaging peoples machines.

Sounds like you may have bits of previous downloads still in the system folder and windows is thinking that your new downloads are already installed.
Go to google search and type the name of the win update or what ever the problem download is called followed by "will not install" and you may get an answer as to what needs to be deleted before you can install the new stuff.
I had to remove old net framework "dll's" before the new net framework update would install.I found the answer by doing what I written above.
Sorry I can not be of any more help,,good luck
