Microsoft Longohrn Build 5048 at WinHEC
Posted by Stanley 1700 Day ago, There are 34 comments, 29368 views
Winbeta :Three hundred and fifty three days, that's how long its been since the outside world has been given a peek at the state of Windows, Codename Longhorn. On that day, almost a full year ago now, at WinHec 2004 we received the Longhorn build 4074 DVD in our kit; as recently as today I saw someone in our IRC channel seeking a download of that same build. The long drought for a new build of Longhorn is officially over. I proudly present to you, build 5048...

5048 is to be considered a baseline platform, it doesn't have many bells and whistles. Like any builder, the architects at Microsoft have been working on the foundation first. To the casual observer, Longhorn feels like XP with a new shell. But that is truly where the similarities end. A quick glance at the root of the system drive tells a different story. Dig deeper, and the chasm widens. As I've only had a limited time with these recient builds, my thought is to leave the technical analysis to later when more concrete facts can be presented.

If we only had a download link...

Why would you want a download link?

Seems to me if the finished product is full of buggs & a hunk of junk ,,,namely Windows XP that you have to download a patch (sp2) that is almost as big as the program itself.
Why the hell would you want a Beta version of their next catastrophe?
that would be taking a huge risk i would say

Have you never heard of beta testing?
I have downloaded every beta and alpha version of all windows ever released.
There are plenty of ways to do this without killing your pc.
Beta testing is an excellent way to get experience troubleshooting most pc problems

This isnt a question about saying thanks or not saying thanks....its a question about being given an ultimatum to say thanks(ie,say thanks or i'll eff it up for everyone)
I'v tried Longhorn and its crude and unsophisticated in its present form....perhaps when it gets closer to an official release mid next year it'll be better, but for now its a waste of time.
Delete the link...go ahead,i dare ya.

As far as i know theres not a x64 version available at the moment but it your interested to follow this up further maybe try a few p2p file sharing programs such as eMule/Limewire Pro etc.

Windows XP comes packaged with all kinds of third party drivers and software. It saves a lot of time dealing with modems, lan cards, printers and the rest of your extras.

Not so with LONGHORN. Some Windows XP drivers do not work either even if installed manually. I have working copies of builds 4015 and 4074. Neither one can get on the internet. So BFD.

It sounds like Bill Gates is gonna charge even more money for his next OS. It will be a bigger head ache to install and set up than either the old Windows 95/98/Me platforms. At least you can still get some of the third party software for these versions.

There are several versions of LONGHORN on the P2P networks. Build 4074 DVD also comes in a 64 bit version.
