The Microsoft .NET Framework installs the .NET Framework runtime and associated files required to run applications developed to target the .NET Framework. The .NET Framework improves scalability and performance of applications with improved caching, application deployment and updating with ClickOnce, support for the broadest array of browsers and devices with ASP.NET 2.0 controls and services.

Thanks, Ive installed it. But was wondering I still have my 1.1 and 2.0 in my add/remove? it doesnt install over them? Need advice, should I leave them there or uninstall them?
RE : by royal_exulter on 2006-11-07 22:17:16
uninstall them
RE : by bumpai16 on 2006-11-07 22:24:19
no leave them  there because different programs use different versions of dot net framework.
RE : by Nixus on 2006-11-07 22:26:42

Leave them installed! They are still neccessary to run programs written on those frameworks. Think of the various version of the .net framework as independent from eachother rather than an upgraded version.

RE : by JainMJ on 2006-11-07 23:11:29
All versions of .net framework are designed to work side by side. One version will not interfere with another version (will not even know the existence of other versions). An application developed using .net 1.0 or 1.1 or 2.0 will definitely wok in 3.0. So you can uninstall older versions of .net framework. BUT, an app developed in .net 1.1 will perform best if you have 1.1 installed in your system (similar is the case with other versions). But I dont think that it will make a noticeable difference. And if you are going to develop applications in Visual studio.net 2005 or older, you will need to keep the old versions of framework.

Re: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Final by terencemok on 2006-11-07 23:05:39
this is a release candidate version, not a final version
RE : by JainMJ on 2006-11-07 23:30:57
are u sure its an RC? the final version is already released.
RE : by fatboys25 on 2006-11-08 00:14:50

FINAL?

This is not Custom update like 1.1,and the following

1.1 hotfix and following 2.0 updates.

So upon a browser search yes this is only an RC1.

Can someone please tell me what is .NET Framework for and I don't have any versions of it, do I need it?

Thank You
RE : by JainMJ on 2006-11-08 01:17:43
To run JAVA applications in your system, you must have Java runtime environment (JRE) installed in your system. To run .net applications in Your system, you must have .net framework installed. .net is the latest programming platform from microsoft.
RE : by urmysin on 2006-11-08 14:39:20
Just about all display drivers require you to have it now. It has something to do with that I guess?? Any1 help us out here.... LOL ;-)

Re: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Final by kotor87 on 2006-11-08 16:34:58
I have installed this version but the older one are still there. Do i need to remove them?
Re: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Final by pascal4 on 2006-11-08 17:02:38
No! You'll need them...
I just checked Microsoft RAW Picture Viewer, it requires 1.1 and works ONLY if 1.1 is installed!

A note for programmers, if you want to develop commercial applications think that a lot of small and medium businesses still use Win 98 or 2000, operating systems which are not supported by .NET 3.0! So .NET 2.0 is the only solution viable solution for the moment!

Furthermore, read this: For customers that already have the .NET Framework 2.0 installed, this .NET Framework 3.0 redistributable package installs only the new Windows Vista components. This ensures that any .NET Framework 2.0-based applications work seamlessly when the .NET Framework 3.0 is installed, with no application migration or updates of any kind required.
