Naming it Service Pack 1 adds to product's credibility as a long term product and adds to goodwill making people think Microsoft cares to service their old products.

There are at least 2 solid products who can replace MS Virtual PC, and both work without problems:
1) VMWare, it's commercial but it's the most widely used among pros.
2) VirtualBox, it's opensource (Free), it's my fav, not as powerful as VMWare but also not as complicated.
