THE LINK IS FOR VERSION 2.12.4
I always used "patch" programs with NOD32 and with AnyDVD simply because I want a fool proof installation that will go on without expirations. This way I can install it even on a non-techie PC.
So, should I wait for a good patch program or can I download the registred version with the username and password? What if it becomes blacklisted after a signature update?
I've been using NOD32 for about 4 years now
and I do not think there is no foolproof patch
with the newer versions. (I had the 2.0 version
working without U/N-P/W for almost a year and
a half, with no problems).
The reason it does not work on the newer
versions is because they can change the program with a download from the virus and service update,
on their internal server.
Recently I have been downloading 100-300kb
virus updates; when out of the blue I get this 1.4 MB
update for the viruses. What?
So, I download it, and low and behold the next time
I rebooted, nod32krn.exe would not open on
start-up. So the program was changed by that
last virus update. Never update the program, btw!
Other than that, it was time for me to update to
the 2.5 beta, which I did with no problems.
(the beta 2.5 server is still working as of today,
don't know about tomorrow, good luck experimenting!)

I don't place a lot of faith in those virus shootouts. You can read a dozen different ones and they all reach different conclusions. A friend of mine and I were fortunate enough to be able to do our own (a website had been setup with more than a dozen viruses infected files containing more than 20 viruses).
Our conclusion was that Panda and PC-Cillin were the best. KAV was also good but severe on resources.

But, this full version downloadable with username and password is working on and on in the months, and will I need something else to install it and make it work?
Can somebody tell me if I need something else, if the username and password are working or after a reboot I need something else?

I've used KAV for 4 years now and it detects everything that many others I've tested on other machines in my net won't detect.
NOD32 now on my 2003 Server but have no judgement on it until I've used it for some months and checked it out more in depth. Resource wise it's great and installation of minimal amount of files in the system, and minimal registry entries.
McAfee Enterprise 8 has been quite good but is a bit of a nightmare to uninstall as it puts a lot of keys in the registry plus it locks a lot of them.
Norton IS a joke. That company is great at promoting itself to the public but it's protection is less than fair. On hacking forums we discuss the ease to which Norton can be circumvented with minor modifications to existing trojans, for.ex..

I build and repair computers. I've used all of the software vendors mentioned, and, feel that NOD32 is by far the best. NOD has not missed a virus since early 1998 (VirusBulletin.com), the date the tests were started. None of the others can say this. In fact, they've all missed quite a few. Also, for the past 4 years Microsoft Labs has been using NOD32 (contract renewed 4 times).
Besides it's record, what I also like is NOD32 is small, non-obtrusive, and, uses very little resources to run. Yet it does everything all the others do.it

I'm a security writer in an italian PC magazine. Not KAV, PANDA, NORTON,PC-CILLIN: i tried all of them. NOD 32 is the real antivirus KING!! Far the best!! The second is Sophos and third AVG.

I guess you all are missing out on a very important anti-virus which is said to have the highest heuristics engine and has detected potentially 99% of the viruses.
The name is MKS_VIR 2004 [www.stormbyte.com] I've been using it since the past 1 year and believe me till today it has successfully wiped all viruses that have attacked my PC.

If you are ever short of a NOD32 username and password. Check out the Kadet's site. There will always be a username and password within about 1 or 2 days of expiration.

Not putting much trust to the posts of people pointing out one or the other as the best one/ones without precising what it's good at. There are so many levels to the security of an app.
Some ar better at protecting vs tampering of it and some are better at archive scans. Some detect more virii, some update more prequently. Some are better att detecting modifications, etc..
This is how a test is supposed to be presented:

www.av-test.org/sites/test_all.php3?test=2001-11&lang=en
But the test is ancient history by now though.
