Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install the official RealPlayer. You do need a media player that is capable of playing RealMedia files. The included Media Player Classic supports it. Supported are RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealVideo (.rm .ram .rmvb), RealText (.rt), and ReadPix (.rp). Not fully supported are: Streaming smil files (.smi .smil) and Realmedia embedded in webpages. Download

I guess it depends on what your needs are. I use Real Alternative and I've never had any problems with it. It plays all Real Media files and comes in a nice small, clean package. The Official Real Player comes bundled with adware/spyware and a lot of other things that I don't need. Just make sure that if you install Real Alternative you also install the included Media Player Classic, because it is required to play the files.

never install real player... it s-ucks... ALWAYS install real alternative.. is the best!!
