WinRAR is a powerful archive manager. It can backup your data and reduce size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format.

Changelog:

1. Bugs fixed:

      a) fixed two vulnerabilities, which could be exploited with
         specially crafted ACE and UUE/XXE archives;

      b) previous version did not delete some of temporary files;

      c) WinRAR could crash when processing very long (more than
         1024 characters) archive name parameter in the command line

These high compression tools are not good at all if you care about your data. WinRAR and WinZIP are the limits of proper compression. There is no other technology to keep data exactly the same, and compress it. Ultra high compression tools are dangerous. They change files and code, and cause huge loss in quality in things like images (jpg's)... etc. Your data is not safe in super high compression tools. Another very dangerous compression tool is called Miliki. It ruins images. But doesn't change the size of them. They go in and out all the same, but it tears the images to pieces during compression. Nobody can beat rar and zip. bz2, and 7z are ok as well, and open source.

Who says that high compression corrupts files ?

All these software provide LOSSLESS compression, which means that the files are restored back to the way they were originally. In fact, thats how they are designed, ground up, because if they didn't provide lossless compression then the whole algorithm would be useless.

UHA implements the PPMd algorithm, which has been tried and tested in various applications, including 7-zip and now, WinZip 10.

Besides, no one would even try to compress already compressed formats like JPG and MP3. At the most, a final Huffman coding over the whole archive may make sense (which I believe most archivers do)- other than that there are no special 'lossless' algorithms that can be applied to compressed formats. And yea, implementing any sort of lossy code would be like 'cheating' and would defeat the whole purpose of the project. Imagine- if they did indeed include lossy compression algorithms, then UHA would never work with programs that check their code for modifications- Take for instance Nero- (anyone who tried replacing the bitmaps in Nero.exe would know what I'm talking about) I have been trying UHA compression on the Nero suite since a while now, and so far all the UHA archives I made worked error free. Don't take my word for it, try it out for yourself.

Other than packing software, I do use UHA sometimes for compressing only images (I know, like it would make any difference)- but so far I haven't seen a single image which had been modified. Try it out for yourself. Take a bunh of images and MP3s. Note down their exact sizes (in bits if you want to) and UHA them. Extract them and check their sizes again. Open them and carefully compare the originals with the extracted ones.

Yes, but there is one vaild point though in the above posts- UHA and 7z aren't as reliable as rar and zip are- but this is only because they don't offer any redudancy. You can repair damaged zips and rars, but not UHA and 7z.

I hope that clears up the confusion.

Btw, afa WinRAR is concerned, thanks for posting the keys but I'd still prefer SnD's patch as it allows me to edit locked archives- perfect for editing the official WinRAR installer to make my own 'corp' edition ^_^

PS: It was difficult to keep this post as clean as possible- It was way too tempting to throw expletives and abuses- The above posts are the kind that can make the geek in you go mad :)

SND patch? by GWolfman on 2005-10-12 01:24:56
Anyone know where I can get the SND patch that allows editing of "locked" archives???  (so says _deXter_).  Any help would be great.  Thanks!
UHA is DEFINATELY faulty by Fox-htv on 2006-02-03 08:38:41
I downloaded Nero 7 from here and it was compressed by UHA. I had some problems with Nero and so was forced to install it more than once. I soon learnt that sometimes incd wouldn't work, sometimes the burning rom (all after install), all depending on UHA's mood during decompression. So I side with winrar too, although its GUI is kinda dull (there I think its needs tips from winzip), lol ;-)
