WinZip brings the convenience of Windows to the use of ZIP files and other archive and compression formats. The optional wizard interface makes unzipping easier than ever. WinZip features built-in support CAB files and for popular Internet file formats such as TAR, gzip, UUencode, BinHex, and MIME. ARJ, LZH, and ARC files are supported via external programs. WinZip interfaces with most virus scanners. Latest Changes: Two Versions: Standard and Professional - Explorer style view: Navigate your Zip files in the familiar Explorer-style view, making it much easier to work with large, multi-folder archives - Improved compression: Significantly reduce the size of your Zip files with two new compression methods which can provide greater compression - WinZip Job Wizard:Automate your repetitive tasks in WinZip 10.0 Pro and easily backup data sets, archive important documents, or distribute information to others - Zip to CD: One step Zip file creation and CD burning in WinZip 10.0 Professional
Agreed! Even WinACE which sometimes gives better compression for binary files is preferable.
However tools like WinZip are still needed in business environment due
to the universal popularity of zip format. To uncompress from a Zip all
you need is WinXP OS. Many users still don't know how to handle ACE/RAR
as most compression tools support only zip as main format.

Aha...
"Caution, WinZip 10.0, when it is released,
will not be a free upgrade. If you are a registered user of a previous
version of WinZip and install WinZip 10.0, you will no longer be
registered. If you have a multi-user license and you wish to try WinZip
10.0, make sure you save a backup copy of your current WinZip before
installing WinZip 10.0, so you can go back to your previous registered
version of WinZip, if you so desire. You do not need to uninstall your
prior, registered version of WinZip. Follow the installation
instructions above. You can install this version of WinZip to the same
location as a previously installed copy of WinZip."

I've have the paid version for years, so I backed up, loaded version 10 beta and gave it a
try. Or I tried to evaluate it. Every time I'd click to do something a box
would pop up making me acknowledge that I needed to pay for it and I'd
have to click that away (over and over and over) to even give it a
test.
That alone pissed me off ... hey, an occasional screen maybe but this
continual hammering to buy was intrusive and just made me want to get
the damn thing off my
computer. Left a bad impression.
I did manage to endure the hammering just long enough to zip a 2.5 MB file with both the old compression method and one of the
new "super" routines that are supposed to give better compression. But
alas, the new routine resulted in a BIGGER file than the old routine.
Those of you looking to steal this version .. it may not even be worth
that little bit of effort ... certainly not worth another $29.
Nothing like driving your existing paying customers off. Guess
that is their choice!
Oh well, WinRAR for which I also happily paid, seems to do it all
anyway. Maybe the time for WinZIP has passed. This "upgrade"
should guarantee it in my opinion.
If you wanted to test WinZip 10 without having that annoying popup, all you have to do is goto Winzip.com and download the beta version from there. If you enter your e-mail address and sign up for the WinZip News you get a free registration code that registers the beta version.
