WinZip brings the convenience of Windows to the use of ZIP files and other archive and compression formats. The optional wizard interface makes unzipping easier than ever. WinZip features built-in support CAB files and for popular Internet file formats such as TAR, gzip, UUencode, BinHex, and MIME. ARJ, LZH, and ARC files are supported via external programs. WinZip interfaces with most virus scanners.

Yeah winzip doesn't really bring much to the table. Personally I
think 7-zip is the best, it can create .zip files that are better than
the one's created from winzip. As for winrar yeah it's not bad,
and it's needed if you need to split rars into multiple files.

Any Coporate Edition available?
If you have a 1kb txt file inside a 100 Mb rar file or even 1000Mb rar
file, winrar is extracting 100-1000Mb in order to open the 1kb txt
file. Pretty stupid.
Totalmente deacuerdo, el 99% de los archivos descargados vienen asi como paquete solido :( Por eso nunca he dejado el winzip

@fubukifan
you should inform yourself first. the case you mention only happens if
you use the solid-archive option which compresses the files inside the
archive in a stream-method, that means it guesses all files are one
file (for better compression) so it needs to unpack all in order to get
one little file from the archive.
that's not the case if you turn of that option. then winrar unpacks one
file immediately, however, it will cause a loss of compression if used
for much files. use solid only if you have enough files for it and it's
worth the size...
WinZip the best, f**k WinRAR! by doomer on 2005-11-04 15:53:33
You are totally ignorant. RAR had become a standard yeeeeears ago, in
MS-DOS times yet, when pkzip/winzip hadn't the option to split files,
for this only purpose. Since yeeeears now, winzip is much, much better
from winrar and any only zip utility; it split files, encrypts,
supports different compression algorithms (greater compression ratio
from any other utility), autoextract, and many-many other options, much
better and especially more flexible than winrar. Winrar is now totally
obsolete; it's just that some guys are still in MS-DOS times and don't
know the winzip options (these guys are so silly, they still split
files in f***ing 1,44 MB rar parts, as if we are using... floppy disks,
now in 2005!)
rar has better ratio, and winrar can handle zip, but winzip can't
handle rar, so winzip is obsolete..... and the 1,44MB split is just an
option, you don't have to use it unless you're a retard... I'm still
laughing at your comment.... you should stop living under the rock and
move to the real world...
For your information even M$ has adopted RAR algorith for certain
archives. Even winzip is only a front end for the basic zip
utility by pkware. Development on it stopped due to copyright proplem
between PKWare & one of the big time computer makers of yester
years. There has not been any change in the algorithm in last 10 years
or so.
Another thing I would like to inform you is that the 700 MB iso files
that you are downloading in say 7/8 parts of <50 mb from rapidshare
are iso files compressed & split by RAR to bring down your
bandwidth usage.
thanks to the ers, but doesn't the release for wz 5 still work ? by pyromaniac on 2005-11-05 22:32:09
