WinZip 10.0 includes major usability enhancements, improved compression technology and, is now available in a Standard and a Professional version. Both the Standard and Professional versions are made available in one distribution file. Functionality is determined by either a Standard or Professional registration code. Both the Standard and Professional versions offer new, state-of-the-art compression technology allowing you to make even smaller Zip files, and a new Explorer-style view of your Zip file contents, making them easier to navigate, modify, and extract. Other enhancements include: the ability to create split (multi-volume) Zip files during compression, automatic update checking, and support for the Windows XP SP2 Attachment Manager.
If you've ever used WinZip to backup data sets, archive important documents, or distribute information to others on a regular basis, you'll appreciate the WinZip Job Wizard, included in WinZip 10.0 Pro. The WinZip Job Wizard provides powerful productivity and automation features that help to simplify your repetitive compression tasks.

Changes between Beta 1 (build 6044) and Beta 2 (build 6644)

  • Support for DVD Burning has been added. You can now create a new Zip file on a DVD as well as on a CD. Note: CD/DVD writing is only available on systems with the Windows XP operating system.
  • The Job Wizard "Select Items" feature has been changed. The left pane now only displays folders, instead of folders and files.
  • In the Job Wizard, when you check (or include) a folder in either pane, the contents of that folder are now automatically displayed in the right pane.
  • The "Reuse WinZip window" option is now turned off on installation.
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes and minor enhancements, including:
    • WinZip startup - Certain configurations would cause WinZip to take a long time to boot up. This has been corrected. The delay may still occur when accessing the CD/DVD writing.
    • Job Wizard - "Select Items" no longer shows network shortcuts in either pane. To specifiy a network location, you must use Entire Network.
    • Check for Updates ? did not work with Norton Internet Security, even after granting connection permissions. This has been addressed.

Better using WinRAR available at www.rarsoft.com

and

7zip  available at www.7-zip.org

HIGHER COMPRESSION RATES, better formats handling, more tools & tricks

Yea, dumped Winzip some time ago.  WinRar is my choice!

Ok: Heres the lowdown on WinZip 10:

The so called 'state-of-the-art' compression technology is nothing but inclusion of PPMd algorithm, which has already made a name in established programs like 7-zip and UHA. Unfortunately, that doesnt make WinZip provide any better PPM implementation than the others- infact its the worst.

Now since PPM is best suited for largely text based archives- I choose one such archive containing mostly text files- the total folder size was 40 MB.

Heres how the compression went about (max compression in all cases):

WinZip 10 (ehd) : 2.60 MB
WinZip 10 (bzip) : 2.56 MB
WinZip 10 (ppm) : 2.53 MB

WinRAR 3.50 (solid) : 2.41 MB
7-zip 4.29 (ppm) : 2.37 MB
WinUHA 2.0 (ppm) : 2.17 MB

Well there you have it! All types of max compression used by WinZip 10 were still easily overshadowed by all the other compression utilities.

WinZip never had the best compression. I stopped using WinZip after version 6, (when WinACE had come out). Since then, no matter what they did, they never managed to achieve the highest compression. As a matter of fact, even PKZIP (dos) used to make smaller ZIPs when compared to WinZip!

The new zip files made by wz10 can be unpacked using 7zip, which is free and open source.

I see absolutely NO reason why anyone would use a program like WinZip. Its not even worth pirating.

Do youself a favour and erase WinZip from all your memories. Its a thing of the past now, and deserves to be in a museum.

Yes , you are completely right especially when we have zip format implement in WinXP already , but hmmm... there is no but , maybe some analogy with AMD and Intel , there can be only "brand"-(a recognizable kind) issue lefted for "BUT" and/or "low profiled" or "not interested in high compression" interest of winzip users.

But, there is a BUT. ;)  XP's built-in support doesn't support WinZip 10's new compressions.  In fact, I'm not sure it even supports the highest (if you can call it that) one of WinZip 9.

But, I didn't realize that:

"The new zip files made by wz10 can be unpacked using 7zip, which is free and open source."

Does anyone realize that PKWare is still doing their thing, although it's kind of over in the corner? Heh
