I used to use WinZip years ago but after i used great compressors such as WinRAR, PowerArchiver, and 7-Zip (this free app beats WinZip ridiculously) I never went back to WinZip cuz they still dont support the popular RAR format after all these years that WinZip has been out in the computer app community.

Thats not true. Actually version 11 supports extracting from .bz2 and .rar archives. WinRaR still owns tho.

winzip is great... i dont know if the earlier versions handled rar files or not.... but this one does...n does it with elan.....

Just curious about it, it decompresses in ~ 600MB.

I read evanini and I agree. WinZip was great when there was nothing but WinZip. My respects and R.I.P.

But why they released version 11.0 right NOW, one day after the last version 10.0?

Regular users who doesn't notice minor versions changes (e.g., from version 8.013 to 8.021) probably will notice a major change like that. And why they want people to upgrade?

Changes in WinZip 10.0 Build 7245; November 14, 2006:

- It`s a critical update to all installations of WinZip 10.0. This build addresses a security vulnerability that exists in one of its component modules.
- This vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a system with an unpatched installation of WinZip 10.0 if the user was to visit a malicious web page. While there are no known exploits as of this announcement, WinZip 10.0 users are strongly urged to update to build 7245, due to the critical nature of the vulnerability.

I can tell you WHY WinZip is still alive.

The highschool where my daughter goes and the college that I attend ONLY allow homework files to be turned in that use WinZip. ALL the computers at both schools have WinZip on them.

I have been fighting them for years to se RAR, but have had no success.

No prob. If you everfind the full version of the Companion for Outlook, please post a link. The dl from WZ is a 45 day trial that can't be registered; they make a full version instead. Cheers...

Hey dudes, WinRar rulez no doubt, but Winzip is "THE" recognised zipping standard amongst the normal peeps out there, that don't get the archive trip the way we do!

Some establishments mail servers may even delete rar files as suspect :(

And besides, I like having both, coz their file icons tell me at glance what's a zip and what's a rar !

AND...! you can open Winzip and Winrar simultaneously and drag and drop and convert your files between them etc ;)

BOTH have never let me down, EVER,
and 7zip and Winace are good team players too.

WinZip = keeping it simple
WinRar = getting serious

thnx..i think winzip in better than winrar...actually the result of compression file doesn't important to me..user interface & performance are things that i like from winzip

Winzip and Winrar both suck

Winace pwns both of them for its compression levels,.. its just that stupid people can't use it coz its more complex then winrar.

The winrar has lot of feature as repairing of file ,spliting of file giving password to the file and lot many.

its a matter of preference...others use firefox, opera, ie7...its up to you! though winzip has improve a lot can now recognize rar! both are great programs...i use winrar 3.62 too!....2 heads are better than one!
