American software giant Microsoft could be facing a bite on the corporate ass in its ongoing efforts to have Windows customers verify their operating systems are legally supplied versions by registering them online.

According to Al Gillen, an analyst for market research company IDC, Microsoft’s current verification drive could well see Windows customers switching over to rival Linux.

Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage program is, of course, voluntary, but the voluntary nature of the program is somewhat negated by the fact that those who choose to opt out will be refused certain Windows updates unless they verify the validity of their operating system.

IDC has stated in its top-10 infrastructure software predictions for the coming year, that this restriction is likely to push illegitimate Windows users over to an open-source OS.

“We don’t think this is a pure win for Microsoft,” commented Gillen. “This is going to accelerate the Linux market as well.” Naturally, the loss of illegal OS users isn’t likely to overly unsettle Microsoft, but it is likely to prompt a gradual upturn in market share for rivals Linux.

Gillen also noted that those Windows users who don’t volunteer to participate in Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage scheme would not be eligible for updates such as Internet Explorer 7, though critical patches and security updates would still be available.
