Very simply put, the Windows Update website has now been updated to using v6. v6 is no longer in its beta stages and any normal users, who weren't testing the site, will now be directed to v6 instead of v5. The reference was to the original article when v6 was still in its beta phase. I wish some people would actually check these things out before flaming away.
And as far as the Genuine Advantage thingie goes, anybody with Automatic Update on will automatically download it so I guess either loads of illegitimate copies of windows are about to lose the ability to autoupdate or that you still have to go through the motions of verifiying your copy is genuine to enter the program. Legally speaking, the latter is more applicable from what I've gathered through other Genuine Advantage downloads on the Microsoft website. The tool that is downloaded when you "upgrade" to using v6 is only the same tool that is used online.

Don´t be worry about ms "validation" of their products that is for scarying common people .When Linux ,OsX... and bunch of MS bugs and holes will disappeare, then we will have to be worryed about MS "validation", but this scenario will never happened. It is in MicroSoft interest to MS´s keys be leaked on the web.

I use autopatcher to update every month. I don't trust windows update.

Hey i went to my windows update and its still stuck at v5. When will it change to V6?

Hmm, Ok, so if someone were to have used a keychanger to validate windows xp, then they could find the key they used with a key finder. They could then enter that key into the genuine advantage site, and that key could be accepted and the person could still update?

Or is there a chance that person could end up with no XP??!
