It has already been foretold that Vista will be released at version 6.6.6

A source close to Microsoft has confirmed to me that Windows Vista will in fact carry the build number 6.0.6000. He found this out by receiving a mail with the build stamp "Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16384" so that ends that speculation.

Also the MSDN subscription page has been updated with the following information

Windows Vista and Office 2007: Availability on MSDN Subscriber Downloads
Windows Vista and Office 2007 will be available through MSDN Subscriber downloads within 7 days of release to manufacture (RTM). MSDN Subscriptions is committed to making new content available to our subscribers as soon as is practical.
Looks like we'll be seeing this appear soon.

Update: Several key Microsoft employees has firmly stated that Vista has not been released to manufacturing. The day might be soon, but is certainly not today, or tomorrow. There’s still a bit more work to do. Build 6000.16384 is real, but it also doesn’t mean RTM. These days, Microsoft doesn’t have to increase the major version number when building, so theoretically, any sub-set of build 6000 (6000.16385, 16386, etc...) can be RTM.

I hear that RTM2 is practically the final version but it still has a few bugs. I will check it out Tomorrow.

How come they release RC versions with A LOT OF BUGS?

The term release candidate refers to a final product, ready to release unless fatal bugs emerge. In this stage, the product features all designed functionalities and no known showstopper class bugs. At this phase the product is usually code complete.

By the way, RTM IS FINAL/GOLD.

Not if you do it right and if you are using a key you are DOING IT WRONG!!

The key is used in the 'Frankenbuild' or meritage of RC1 and RC2 timer files with Vista RTM. The principal, substituting the 30 days to death files in RTM with the 180 days to death files in the RC's is pretty cool but not what a long term user wants. The more recent "Stop Timer" method in theory has no death in sight. This method employs using the RTM ( I know it works in the 'Bill gates' or 6.0.6000.16386 build) and installing it as the ultimate edition but without using a key. Vista allows that. Just do not enter a key and click away the nags..it will install.
Obtain the Stop Timer files, the "Dancing Monkey' version works well and apply them exactly as the .nfo file recommends.
You will see that your Vista is kept permanently in the 'Trail Version' as you did not install a key and the 4 timers that run the 30 day clock are not allowed to run. You Vista will always have 43200 (30 days) to run. You can check this by running the 'slmgr.vbs -dlv' command.
As soon as you have Vista installed TURN OFF all updating. Do not attempt to update this OS until a safe means of doing so is produced. Yes, the stop timer instructions say that you can update but that was when the fix was new. Its about 3 weeks old and certainly MS has positioned their update servers to sniff and kill it. DO NOT UPDATE!
