KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.
What's new:
- New "noaudio" boot option, prevents sound from being probed

After many release canidates and a lot of testing. KDE 3.1 has finally gone final. KDE 3.1 comes in two forms. The first is a binary (if one is available for your OS). A binary is a precompiled package to install on your machine. The second method of installing it is to compile the source yourself. Right now there are binaries available for ASPLinux, Connectiva, Debain, SuSE, Slackware, and a few other OSes. There are many updates and new features in this version. KDE has not officially announced its release so you are hearing it here first. I will update you with a full list of changes as soon as KDE makes them available.

Linux vendor SuSE has released software that enables Linux desktop users to run Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Office programs. The company's Linux Office Desktop 8.1 can run such applications as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and also includes StarOffice 6.0, a Linux alternative to Microsoft Office. "We find that people who have worked in Excel for years have built up a certain amount of macros" and do not want to lose them, SuSE vice president Joseph Eckert told NewsFactor. CNET.news.com post : MandrakeSoft, the financially strapped creator of the Mandrake version of Linux, said Wednesday it filed for the French equivalent of bankruptcy protection from creditors.
One of the best Linux OS has run out of money. I guess Mandrake 9 is the last Mandrake release you will get to use.
In a statement on the company's Web site, the Paris-based company said its financial liabilities prompted it to file for "declaration de cessation des paiements," the French equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The move allows the company to take court-overseen actions such as renegotiating its debt while continuing its operations.

The Mandrake 9.1 Beta is now being mirrored and will soon be available for testing. This first beta includes Linux 2.4.21pre2, XFree 4.3Beta plus a port of the installation procedure and several Mandrake applications to Gtk2.0. The final desktop look is not available in this release. Additionally, this first Beta of Mandrake Linux 9.1 has been downsized to only one CD. We will use the RPM-voting system as a way to determine which applications must be included in the distribution, which can be safely removed, and what packages should be handled on a priority basis. With your input we can optimize our resources to produce a better distribution. Who knows the needs of the community better than
