During his keynote address on day two of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC), Microsoft Senior Vice President of the Windows Client Division, detailed his company's roadmap for delivering Longhorn, the next major Windows version. Contrary to previous reports, Longhorn will not ship in beta form until early 2004, and will not be released to manufacturing until 2005, Poole said.
"There will be a huge wave of excitement for the industry when Longhorn ships in 2005," Poole noted. "There's been a lot of speculation about whether we'd do an interim release before then. I don't think so. Instead, we will have additional releases, follow-ons, for Windows XP Media Center Edition (MC

No more than a few days have passed since the apparent leak of Longhorn 4015 to WiNBETA (not the web) and Neowin has learned of a possible new build, this time at build #4021. Our source who wants to be known only as Serpant_winalpha has also said that this will leak very soon.
as with 4015:
(Build 4021.main.030415-0745) DX 9 (9.0.900)
WMP 9 (2991), Windows Messenger 5
Media Player & Classic Tray (Quick Launch?), located on the sidebar.
We have 2 screenshots and 2 files for download, Neowin can't confirm if this is real or not. Longhorn is scheduled to enter Beta phase in or around the end of the summer so this build is still considered Alpha. There are improvement

Now that we've all had the opportunity to play with Windows 2003 for a few weeks now, anyone ready for a real desktop operating system? Well its not that good yet but its obvious that codename Longhorn is progressing in leaps and bounds. With the 2003 team all free and coming back from vacation soon, we can expect much more regular glimpses at Microsoft's next-gen desktop. Build 4015, although only 7 builds away from our last glimpse, notice the build date. They are obviously not up to the full build speed that we can expect with betas.
Points of note:
(Build 4015.main.030328-1500) DX 9 (9.0.900)
WMP 9 (2991)
Windows Messenger 5
A curious kill button which

Installed Longhorn 4008, rumours were that it was fake, but it is real. Setup is based on Windows Preinstallation Environment, setup looks completely different, you dont see any progress...but it installs very fast!
Build is compiled on Feb 19. Obviously this is an alpha build. Lonhorn when its done wont look like this, but nice to play and see it now.
First of all, the new setup (based upon PE) makes it easier, quicker and prettier to install Longhorn. PE's functionality is to essentially replace DOS with minimal components such as running Windows Setup, scripts or custom installation and imaging applications. WinPE was designed to automate preinstallation of windows to workst

The next time you see Microsoft software developers showing off their latest invention, the question to ask is whether their work will be in Longhorn.
It's not an inside joke among the coding cowboys. Longhorn is the code name for a radically new version of Windows designed to be a foundation of Microsoft's business in the coming decade. More than 2,000 of the company's engineers are rushing to finish the project by late 2004.
"It's a phenomenal step forward and very ambitious," Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates said of Longhorn. It's "my big-time focus now."
The new operating system is expected to be a key weapon in Microsoft's battle against low-cos
