Because choices are good? Or because there would be more money to be milked? Perhaps the victims of having 8 different flavors of Windows Vista are the software vendors, who would have to explain the differences between each edition to their customers.Here's a quick rundown of the 8 product editions:

According to sources Microsoft will release build 5219 to attendees in the next few hours (Tuesday?).
5219.winmain_idx02.050824-2010 is the build tag so the build is a couple of weeks old. the screenshot and videos of the leaked beta 2 of Windows Vista unveils new features, apps,and enhancement such as the new games folder.

Microsoft has revealed the projected release dates of Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7 in a phone conversation with vnunet.com's French sister publication SVM, the publication claims."Beta 2 of Windows Vista, Microsoft's future operating system, is slated for release in the first week of December 2005 at best," a posting dated 29 August said. "The final release has been pushed back until September or October 2006."
Beta 2 of IE 7 is set for September 2005 followed by the release of the final version in December, the story continues. The product launch will coincide with Vista beta 2. Vista beta 1 was released to testers in July.

Microsoft's current plan for OpenGL on Windows Vista is to layer OpenGL over Direct3D in order to use OpenGL with a composited desktop to obtain the Aeroglass experience. If an OpenGL ICD is run - the desktop compositor will switch off - significantly degrading the user experience.In practice this means for OpenGL under Aeroglass:
OpenGL performance will be significantly reduced - perhaps as much as 50%
OpenGL on Windows will be fixed at a vanilla version of OpenGL 1.4

An Austrian virus writer has published five simple viruses targeting Microsoft MSH in a virus writing magazine. These proof-of-concept viruses will never became a real-world problem, but the case is interesting historically, as these are the first viruses for a totally new platform.MSH, or Microsoft Command Shell, is a command line interface and scripting language.
